The true ultimate villain of Potter arrives in this movie, with loathsome politician Dolores Umbridge taking over Hogwarts as the establishment tries to keep Voldemort’s return quiet. Meanwhile, Voldemort is trying to crack Harry’s mind like an egg, and he’s succeeding. Seriously, was there not a hairdresser available for these guys?

The Harry Potter movies are based around the eponymous boy wizard’s time at the legendary Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, as he tries to prevent the evil Lord Voldemort’s return. The spin-off Fantastic Beasts saga is set decades earlier, and even that’s not the end of the Wizarding World story. Harry Potter and The Deathly Hallows Part 1 takes place in 1997 and coincides with the seventh and final book in the series. This is the first film that breaks up the story of a single book into two movies, and for good reason as there’s a lot of story to unpack. In what would have been Harry’s seventh year at Hogwarts, Harry, Hermione, and Ron instead set out into the real world to find and destroy Horcruxes. With quite a bit of action and deep character growth between Harry, Ron, and Hermione it’s clear the franchise is reaching it’s climax here. We also get a deeper look at the relationships between Voldemort and the rest of the Death Eaters.

Dementors, creatures that feed on despair, search for Sirius and guards the school. As Harry struggles with his reaction to the dementors, he reaches out to Remus Lupin, a new professor who teaches him the Patronus charm. On a windy night, Ron is dragged by a black dog into the Shrieking Shack, a haunted house, and Harry and Hermione follow. Lupin enters the shack and explains that Sirius was James Potter’s best friend; he was framed by another friend of James, Peter Pettigrew, who hides as Ron’s pet rat, Scabbers. As the full moon rises, Lupin transforms into a werewolf and bounds away, and the group chase after him. They are surrounded by dementors, but are saved by a figure resembling James who casts a stag Patronus.
